Boil-water and do-not-drink notices: country by country

Of 62 countries, only Ireland keeps one national boil-water notice list; 3 have state lists and 42 have no official source found.

Updated 2026-10-27· 74 official sources

Short answer. Of the 62 countries compared, only Ireland, where a single national operator publishes the notices, keeps a single national list of boil-water notices 1. Sweden's Krisinformation.se carries the notices judged important 2. Australia (New South Wales only) 3, Canada 4 and the United States 5 have state or provincial lists. For 42 countries, no official source on notices could be verified.

How do the 62 countries compare?

Each country links to its full page. "Not found in official sources" means the official sources reviewed did not show the point; "unconfirmed" means the issuing body is described nowhere in a source we could open. The last column lists only pages a resident can read: an API or a raw dataset on its own is not counted as a public page.

Which countries keep a national list?

Ireland is the only clear case. Uisce Éireann runs the public supply nationally and lists boil-water notices on one page, with a search by Eircode and a map of each affected area; it offers no data feed 1. Sweden comes close in a different way: Krisinformation.se, run by the civil defence agency, republishes the notices it judges important, such as a boiling recommendation for the town of Hallstahammar, but not every local notice 2.

Which countries have state or provincial lists?

Three federal countries have lists that stop at a state or provincial border:

  • Australia: NSW Health keeps a table with the supplier, locality, date issued, date lifted and status of each notice, for New South Wales only 3.
  • Canada: Quebec lists boil-water and do-not-consume notices by administrative region, but only those issued for E. coli 4; Manitoba publishes its advisories as PDFs with maps 49; Indigenous Services Canada lists short-term advisories for First Nations communities south of the 60th parallel 50.
  • United States: the Florida Department of Health keeps a boil-water notice page, compiled from several sources including the press 5; in Mississippi, the active-notices page was last reviewed on 28 June 2024 58. Nationally, EPA's SDWIS records violations for each water system, which is not a list of current notices 74.

Where are notices announced only locally?

Eleven countries have an official source on notices but no national list; in most, notices come from the local utility, municipality or health office:

  • By water company or distributor: the Netherlands, often by postcode 30; the United Kingdom, on each company's incident page 44; Belgium, through distributors such as SWDE and the municipalities 7.
  • By municipality or council: Norway, e.g. Bergen 32; New Zealand, e.g. Watercare in Auckland 63; South Africa, e.g. Johannesburg Water 72.
  • By health authorities: Poland's district sanitary stations, about 318 sites with no national feed 34; Iceland, where MAST gives general guidance while local bodies issue the notices 21.
  • With a partial national channel: Germany, where the NINA warning system can carry a notice by district, though not systematically 17; France, where national sampling data can show non-compliant water one to two months late, which is not a register 14.
  • Unconfirmed: Luxembourg, where the water agency's news feed showed no boil notice 27.

Three more publish supply outages rather than boil notices: Taiwan, through an open feed that excludes Taipei 68; Peru, through SEDAPAL in Lima 56; and Malaysia, through each state operator 62. In Costa Rica, AyA has an interruptions page, but it showed no readable content 53.

Where was no official source found?

For the other 42 countries, no official source on boil-water or do-not-drink notices could be opened and confirmed: Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Mexico, Moldova, the Philippines, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine and the United Arab Emirates. This does not mean notices are never issued there. It means the table cannot name the issuer or a list from an official page. In these countries, the local water utility and municipality are the places to check.

Where can residents read their own water results?

Thirteen countries have an official or sector page where a resident can look up results for their own area: Austria 6, Switzerland 42 and the Netherlands 30 by postcode; Ireland by Eircode 23; Belgium by municipality or postcode 897; Portugal by municipality 36; Spain by supply zone 39; Estonia 13, Denmark 12 and Japan 61 by water system; India by village 60; the United Kingdom through each company 45; and the United States through each system's yearly report 59. Two of these, in Austria and Switzerland, depend on suppliers choosing to publish 642.

Elsewhere, residents mostly find national summaries, as in Germany 18, Slovenia 38 and Poland 35, or data built for developers, as in France 14, South Korea 67 and Colombia 52. For what to do once a notice is issued, see what to do during a boil-water notice, what a do-not-drink notice means and how to make water safe to drink. To read your own supplier's results, see how to check if your tap water is safe. The water section gathers the related pages.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one website listing every boil-water notice in a country?

Only in Ireland among the 62 countries, where Uisce Éireann lists notices nationally with a search by Eircode 1. Sweden's Krisinformation.se carries the important ones 2. Elsewhere, lists exist at best for a state or province, such as New South Wales 3 or Florida 5.

Do emergency alert apps send boil-water notices?

Sometimes. In Germany, local health offices can send a notice through the NINA warning system, but this is not systematic 17. In the Netherlands, NL-Alert is used for serious cases 30, and in Belgium BE-Alert can be used locally 7. The utility's own page remains the primary channel in most countries.

Can I check my tap-water quality by postcode?

In several countries, yes: Austria 6, Switzerland 42, the Netherlands through each drinking-water company 30, Ireland by Eircode 23 and Belgium through De Watergroep 9. In the United Kingdom, each water company publishes quality by postcode; the DWI map shows which company serves you 45.

How do I find out about a notice in the United States?

There is no federal real-time register. Florida 5 and Mississippi 58 keep state lists; otherwise, the notice comes from the water system serving you. That system's yearly Consumer Confidence Report gives its test results 59; how to check if your tap water is safe explains how to read it.
