Short answer. In Belgium, the National Crisis Centre (NCCN, FPS Home Affairs) asks every household to keep an emergency kit for at least 72 hours, with 3 to 10 litres of water per person per day 12. Warnings reach phones through BE-Alert 4. Iodine tablets are free at pharmacies 5. Belgium has no public shelter network: the advice is to shelter in the nearest building 3.

Information verified on 20 October 2026.

Who is responsible for emergency preparedness in Belgium?

The National Crisis Centre (NCCN / Centre de crise National / Nationaal Crisiscentrum), part of the FPS Home Affairs, coordinates crises in their federal phase 8. BE-Alert is the authorities' alert system 48, and the NCCN publishes the nuclear-risk information site risquenucleaire.be / nucleairrisico.be 5.

On 1 October 2026 the NCCN published the practical guide "Prêts. Ensemble" / "Samen voorbereid" in Dutch, French, German and English 7. It is the second phase of a four-year resilience campaign launched in spring 2026, and it covers getting informed, BE-Alert, a household emergency plan, a 72-hour kit and the right reflexes: 112, sheltering and evacuation 72.

  1. Put together the 72-hour kit in two parts, a home stock and a backpack, as the NCCN advises 12.
  2. Register your phone number or e-mail address with BE-Alert (up to five addresses); location-based messages arrive even without registration 4.
  3. Write key numbers on paper and keep them in the backpack 12.
  4. If you live within 20 km of a nuclear site, or have children or are pregnant or breastfeeding, collect a free box of iodine tablets at a pharmacy 5.

Our general guides go further: family emergency plan, 72-hour kit, water per person and shelter or evacuate.
