Short answer. Belgium publishes no public shelter network, no shelter count and no shelter locator 12. The official protective action, "se mettre à l'abri" / "schuilen", is to enter and stay in the nearest building (home, workplace or any other building), close doors and windows, switch off ventilation and move to a central room, for a few hours and at most 24 hours 12.
Does Belgium have public shelters?
No public shelter network is published by the Belgian authorities. The National Crisis Centre (NCCN) does not point people to designated shelters, and there is no official map or search tool for one 12.
What does Belgium tell people to do instead?
Shelter in the nearest building. The NCCN defines it this way: "Se mettre à l'abri signifie entrer et rester dans le bâtiment le plus proche (votre habitation, votre lieu de travail ou tout autre bâtiment) jusqu'à ce que le danger ou le risque soit passé" (Sheltering means entering and staying in the nearest building, your home, your workplace or any other building, until the danger or risk has passed) 1.
In practice, the official steps are 12:
- Go into the nearest building and stay there.
- Close doors and windows.
- Switch off ventilation.
- Move to a central room.
- Follow the instructions given by the authorities.
How long does sheltering last?
From a few hours up to 24 hours at most 12. If the situation does not improve, evacuation follows 12. For the general reasoning on the choice between the two, see Shelter in place or evacuate after a nuclear emergency?. For chemical incidents, see How do you shelter in place during a chemical release?.
How will I know when to shelter?
Instructions come through BE-Alert, official websites, social media, radio and TV, and mobile loudspeakers 1. See Emergency alerts in Belgium.
How can I prepare to shelter at home?
Keep the 72-hour kit the NCCN recommends, so you can stay indoors without going out: water, long-life food, a radio, a torch and medicines 2. See Belgium's emergency supplies. The general principles of shielding are explained in What is a shelter's protection factor?.
