Emergency preparedness in Slovakia: official guidance in English

Slovakia's official preparedness rules in English: water and 14-day blackout supplies, 1,474 public shelters, siren signals, iodine and 112.

Updated 2026-10-20· 7 official sources· Čítať po slovensky

Short answer. Slovakia's Interior Ministry asks households to prepare water, food, heat, medicines and communication, with 3-5 litres of water per person per day and at least 14 days of food and drink for a long blackout 1. Sirens are followed by a spoken message 15. Slovakia has 1,474 hardened and gas-tight public shelters; the plan relies mostly on adapted basements 4. The emergency number is 112 1.

Information verified against official Slovak sources on 20 October 2026. Civil protection is run by the Ministry of Interior's Crisis Management Section and the crisis management departments of the district offices 3.

What is Slovakia's official preparedness guide?

In 2025 the Interior Ministry published Čo robiť v prípade krízy alebo ozbrojeného konfliktu (What to do in times of crisis or armed conflict) 1. It is available as a web page, as a PDF in Slovak, English, Hungarian and Rusyn, and as an MP3 audio version 12. The brochure itself carries no date; the year comes from the PDF files, and the ministry's 2026 news describes it as prepared the previous year.

What does each Slovakia page cover?

Page In short
Emergency supplies Water, food, heat, medicines and communication; 3-5 litres of water per person per day; 14 days of food and drink in a blackout 1
Kit checklist The official list line by line, plus the evacuation bag and the shelter bag 13
Public shelters 1,474 hardened and gas-tight shelters for 264,038 people (4.15%); 304,504 simple self-help shelters; ask your municipality 45
Alerts 2-minute wavering siren = general threat; 6-minute steady tone = flood; test on the second Friday at noon; cell broadcast not yet in service 15
Iodine Iodine prophylaxis planned in advance around Bohunice and Mochovce 7; distribution details come from the press and are still being confirmed
Build a shelter No permit or declaration specific to private household shelters; general building rules apply 56
Shelter standards Decree 532/2006: hardened shelters for 5 days, gas-tight shelters for 2 days, within 500 m of people 6
Emergency contacts 112 (also by SMS), 150 fire, 155 ambulance, 158 police, 159 municipal police, 18 300 mountain rescue 1

Where should I start?

Three steps cover most of what the Slovak authorities ask of households:

  1. Supplies. Store water, food, a heat source that does not need electricity, medicines and a battery radio 1. Start with the kit checklist.
  2. Know the signals. Learn the 2-minute wavering tone for a general threat and listen for the spoken message that follows 15. See alerts.
  3. Know your shelter. Ask your municipality which shelter is assigned to your address 56. See public shelters.

Then put it in writing with a family emergency plan.

What is still being confirmed?

Two points are not confirmed by official sources. A cell-broadcast warning system (SK-Alert) is reported in the press as planned for the end of 2026, but no ministry page confirming the timeline was found; the alerts page says so. Details of the iodine tablet distribution come mostly from press reports, and the status of potassium iodide in Slovak pharmacies could not be checked; the iodine page is marked accordingly.
