Countries that hand tablets out before an accident

Sixteen countries give tablets to people ahead of time, at least in part of their territory. Seven say explicitly that it is free: Austria (under-18s, pregnant and breastfeeding women, at pharmacies) 5, Belgium (one box per 4 people, at pharmacies) 7, Canada (homes and businesses near plants in Ontario and New Brunswick) 6364, France (participating pharmacies) 21, Lithuania (automatic e-prescription) 36, Spain (zone I pharmacies) 53 and Switzerland (every ten years, last in 2023) 3.

The other nine hand tablets out without stating the cost in our sources. Sweden posts them to households, holiday homes and businesses in its emergency zones 55. The Netherlands pre-distributed them in 2017 and 2021 40, Luxembourg to all residents 1, the Czech Republic to households near Dukovany and Temelín 16. Japan (about 5 km) 76, Slovenia (10 km) 51, the UK (1.35 km at Sizewell B) 4 and Taiwan (villages in the planning zones) 82 pre-distribute around their plants. Finland supplies only pregnant women and children under 3 19.

Countries where advance handout is decided locally

In four countries the national rules allow advance distribution but leave it to a lower level. In Germany it depends on the Land 26. South Korea allows it in the 3-5 km zone, on application with ID 80. Ukraine allows it within 10 km by local decision 58. In the United States the NRC supplies tablets to states that request them for the 10-mile zone, and states and local governments decide on their use 71.

Countries that keep tablets for an emergency only

Sixteen countries hold stocks and plan to hand them out only once an accident happens. Examples: Poland's state reserves go to municipal points 42, Italy's national strategic stock to regions under the cloud 34, Hungary's stocks sit in pharmacies and mayors' offices within 30 km of Paks 29, and Argentina's National Gendarmerie hands tablets out at the green alert 60. Denmark holds 2 million tablets 17 and Iceland 10,000 (2017 figure) 30. In South Africa the product is potassium iodate, issued at strategic locations around Koeberg 86. In Indonesia the obligation covers only people on an installation site 75.

Countries that describe no distribution

Greece says iodine tablets will in no case be needed there 28. Ireland says they would not be necessary for an accident at a UK plant 32. Latvia plans no iodine prophylaxis on its territory 35, and Estonia describes no state distribution 18. Peru's national plan lists iodine prophylaxis among possible actions but has no pre-distribution 70, and for Serbia no official source on stocks was found 45.

Countries where the picture is unconfirmed

For Georgia the only text found is a 2004 instruction 84; for Israel 85 and Moldova 39, distribution is described only in press reports. Mexico publishes the 16 km zone around Laguna Verde but not who receives tablets 6968. Turkey's planning zones are set in a national plan we did not find published 87. Romania's free 2022 scheme may have ended 44, and Slovakia's municipal handout is described only by the press 47.

Thirteen countries publish no official guidance: Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Malta, New Zealand, the Philippines, Portugal, Qatar and Singapore.

Which country distributes iodine tablets over the largest area?

Luxembourg distributed tablets to all residents 1. Switzerland covers everyone within 50 km of its three plants 3, and Lithuania 17 municipalities within 100 km of Astravets 2. Austria 5 and Belgium 8 supply under-18s and pregnant or breastfeeding women nationwide. See how far zones extend.

Do countries give tablets to adults over 40?

Often not. Croatia plans tablets only for people under 40 13, Taiwan for registered residents aged 40 or under 82, and Germany up to 45, plus pregnant or breastfeeding women of any age 27. Japan targets under-40s but gives tablets to older people on request 76.

What if I live outside a distribution zone?

Several countries hold stocks beyond the zone: French prefects can distribute State stocks 2324, Swiss cantons hold enough for everyone 57, Spain stocks zone II at Government Subdelegations 53, and Slovenia keeps state stocks in hospitals 52. In Canada, people within 50 km (Ontario) or 57 km (New Brunswick) can request tablets free 6664.

Can I take the tablets as soon as I receive them?

No. Austria says they may only be taken on the radiation protection authorities' explicit order 5, and the FDA says KI should not be taken as a preventative before exposure 72. Keep them and wait for the official instruction.
