Short answer. New Zealand publishes no official guidance on distributing, stockpiling or taking potassium iodide (KI), and it has no nuclear power stations. Under Medsafe's classification, iodine for internal use at 300 micrograms or more per daily dose, including its salts such as potassium iodide, is Pharmacy Only 1. But no potassium iodide tablet at thyroid-blocking strength is approved for sale 2.
Does New Zealand distribute iodine tablets?
No distribution, stockpiling or pre-distribution programme has been published. We found no public potassium iodide guidance from the Ministry of Health's Office of Radiation Safety, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) or Medsafe. New Zealand has no nuclear power stations.
Can I buy potassium iodide in New Zealand?
In principle at a pharmacy, without a prescription, but no product is approved. Medsafe's classification database, which reproduces Schedule 1 of the Medicines Regulations, lists 1:
| Medsafe classification entry | Class |
|---|---|
| Iodine for internal use in medicines containing 300 micrograms or more per recommended daily dose | Pharmacy Only |
| Iodine for internal use in medicines containing less than 300 micrograms per recommended daily dose | General Sale |
The database states that its entries apply also to "salts or oxides of elements listed in Schedule 1" 1. Potassium iodide is a salt of iodine, so a 65 mg or 130 mg tablet would be a Pharmacy Only medicine.
However, a search of Medsafe's product database for potassium iodide returns 15 records, and none is a single-ingredient potassium iodide tablet: they are multivitamins, trace-element infusions and antiseptics 2. Potassium iodide was supplied as an unapproved medicine under section 29 of the Medicines Act between 2019 and 2022, according to a Medsafe response to an information request, which does not state the strength or use 3. Ask a pharmacist or doctor before taking any iodine product.
Should I take iodine as a precaution?
No New Zealand official advice tells the public to take or keep iodine tablets. How potassium iodide works, who it is for and its risks are explained, with their own sources, in Potassium iodide (KI): when to take it and who needs it. Do not take any iodine product without advice from a health professional.
What should I do in a radiation emergency in New Zealand?
Follow official instructions. In New Zealand these reach phones through Emergency Mobile Alert, with no sign-up required. For the general choice between sheltering and leaving, see Shelter in place or evacuate after a nuclear emergency?. For what to do after possible contamination, see How do you decontaminate yourself after radioactive fallout?.
