Short answer. Austria's Health Ministry supplies potassium iodide tablets free of charge to children and young people under 18 and to pregnant and breastfeeding women, through pharmacies, schools and childcare facilities 1. People aged 18 to 40 can buy them cheaply in pharmacies without a prescription; people over 40 are advised not to take them 12. Take them only on explicit order of the radiation protection authorities 13.
Who gets free iodine tablets in Austria?
Austria uses a two-track stockpile 1:
- In schools and childcare facilities, for the children there.
- At home, for people under 40.
Tablets are free at pharmacies for children and young people up to 18 and for pregnant and breastfeeding women 1. They are also available at distribution points named by the authorities 13.
| Group | Access | Source |

| Adults 18 to 40 | Can buy them cheaply in pharmacies, no prescription | 12 |
| Adults over 40 | Not advised to take them | 1 |
Can adults buy potassium iodide in Austrian pharmacies?
Yes, if you are 18 to 40. The tablets are sold over the counter, without a prescription, at a low price 1. A 2011 parliamentary answer from the Health Ministry states that these people can buy them "rezeptfrei zum derzeitigen Apothekenabgabepreis von 1,55 €" (without prescription at the current pharmacy price of EUR 1.55) 2. That price dates from 2011 and may be out of date; ask your pharmacy.
Why are people over 40 told not to take them?
The Austrian authorities do not recommend iodine tablets for people over 40 1. The general reasons behind age limits, and how iodine blocking works, are explained in our guide Potassium iodide (KI): when to take it and who needs it.
When should I take the tablets?
Only when the authorities tell you to. The official rule is explicit: "Kaliumiodid-Tabletten dürfen nur nach ausdrücklicher Aufforderung durch die Strahlenschutzbehörden eingenommen werden" (potassium iodide tablets may only be taken on explicit order of the radiation protection authorities) 1.
Austria has no fixed iodine zones. In an accident, the authorities announce on radio and TV who should take tablets and in which regions; intake is expected only in the most affected areas, not across all of Austria 13. Listen to ORF and check notfallschutz.gv.at, the BMLUK's radiological emergency site 3. How warnings reach you is explained on our Austria alerts page.
Do iodine tablets protect against all radiation?
No source we cite presents them that way. They are taken only on explicit order of the authorities, who announce on radio and TV who should take them and where 13.
