Iodine tablets in Portugal: who gets them?

Portugal has no nuclear plants and no public iodine distribution. Pharmacy potassium iodide is a 0.2 mg prescription supplement, not a blocking dose.

Updated 2026-10-20· 2 official sources

Short answer. Portugal publishes no public iodine-tablet distribution and no pre-distribution zones. ANEPC notes that "em Portugal não existem centrais nucleares", Portugal has no nuclear power plants 1. Its radiological-emergency advice lists sheltering indoors and evacuation, not iodine 1. The potassium iodide found in pharmacies is a 0.2 mg prescription supplement 2, far below a thyroid-blocking dose.

Does Portugal distribute iodine tablets?

No public distribution or pre-distribution scheme was found. ANEPC's page on technological risks says there is no risk of a serious nuclear accident in Portugal because the country has no nuclear power plants 1. The same page cites nuclear plants elsewhere in Europe, "em particular em Espanha", as a reason to consider special emergency plans; it names no plant 1.

Whether the health authority (DGS) holds a stock of high-dose tablets is not published.

What are the official protective measures for a radiation emergency?

ANEPC lists three 1:

  1. Warning by radio and TV.
  2. Sheltering at home, with doors and windows shut and ventilation off.
  3. Evacuation, with reception centres outside the contaminated zone.

Iodine is not among them. For sheltering, see our Portugal public shelters page.

Can I buy potassium iodide in a Portuguese pharmacy?

Only a low-dose product was found. An example is "Yodafar 200 microgramas": 0.2 mg per tablet, packs of 50, prescribed and dispensed as usual, with 69% reimbursement 2. In May 2023 the medicines authority Infarmed authorised the use of Spanish-labelled lots of this product, as relayed by Madeira's regional health directorate 2.

Phaenyx found no high-dose (65 or 130 mg) product for radiological protection on sale. At 0.2 mg, the product above is far below a thyroid-blocking dose and should not be treated as one. Our potassium iodide guide explains doses and who should take them, according to international health agencies.

Should I take iodine on my own initiative?

No. In Portugal no official instruction for the public to take iodine was found 1. Follow the instructions given on radio and TV during an emergency 1.

Does the government keep an iodine stock?

It is not published whether DGS holds high-dose tablets.
