Short answer. Hungary's disaster management authority (BM OKF) sets no general multi-day stockpile target, but for sheltering indoors in a nuclear emergency it counts 3-4 litres of drinking water per person per day 1. Warnings come by MoLaRi sirens, SMS alerts, the free VÉSZ app and Kossuth Rádió 2341. Iodine tablets are stockpiled within 30 km of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant 1. The emergency number is 112 5. Who is responsible for civil protection in Hungary?
The Ministry of the Interior's National Directorate General for Disaster Management, BM Országos Katasztrófavédelmi Főigazgatóság (BM OKF), is responsible for disaster management and civil protection, public alerts and the nuclear emergency response 5. It runs the MoLaRi siren system, the SMS-based public alert system and the VÉSZ app 243. Under the 2021 Defence Act, building, maintaining and operating shelters is listed as a civil-protection task during armed conflict 6.

Does Hungary publish a preparedness booklet?
No. Hungary has no national preparedness booklet or household campaign comparable to Sweden's or Finland's 12. BM OKF publishes online behaviour guides by hazard type, such as nuclear emergencies and evacuation, and focuses its public preparedness work on children and young people 1217. The pages on this site follow those online guides.
How long should a Hungarian household be ready to shelter?
BM OKF does not give a general number of days. For a nuclear emergency, it says sheltering indoors may last up to 1-2 days, and it counts drinking water at 3-4 litres per person per day 1. For evacuation, it recommends a pack of no more than 20 kg with food for 2-3 days 1. Details are on the emergency supplies page.
How will I be warned?
Outdoor MoLaRi sirens, which can also broadcast spoken messages, can alert about 517,000 people, mostly around hazardous chemical plants 2. BM OKF also sends SMS-based public alerts and runs the free VÉSZ app for Android and iOS 43. In a nuclear emergency, orders for protective measures are broadcast on Kossuth Rádió, and on MTV1 for evacuation 1. Full details: alerts page.
