Short answer. NNGYK, the public health centre, tells flood-hit areas that tap water is safe until the public health authority orders otherwise, for example to boil it 1. Report any supply cut or sharp pressure drop to your municipality and boil water meanwhile 1. For sheltering, BM OKF counts 3-4 litres of drinking water per person per day 3. Private well water is more often unfit than tap water 2.
How do I know if my tap water is unsafe?
Piped drinking water can be used safely until the public health authority issues a restrictive order, for example a boil-water instruction (forralási utasítás) 1. The national public health centre, NNGYK, gives this advice to people in flood-hit areas 1. Water suppliers and public health authorities test the water continuously during floods 1.
Report any temporary loss of supply or unusually large pressure drop at once to the municipality (önkormányzat) or the district office (járási hivatal), and boil the water until further notice 1. Phaenyx found no national list of current boil-water orders, so expect them locally. How official warnings reach you is on our Hungary alerts page.
NNGYK's guide for municipalities (útmutató a települési önkormányzatok számára) explains their duties: if you have no piped water at home, or your public supply has been temporarily cut off, the municipality must ensure access to healthy drinking water 2. Where this is done through a public standpipe, a water tanker or another public water point, the guide cites the Water Utilities Act (Víziközmű törvény, section 58(11)): at least 20 litres per person per day, within 300 metres of home on foot by public way 2.

How much water should I store?
Hungary publishes no general multi-day stockpile target. For sheltering indoors in a nuclear emergency, which can last 1-2 days, BM OKF counts drinking water at 3-4 litres per person per day ("ivóvíz, naponta fejenként 3-4 literrel számolva") 3. Details are on our Hungary emergency supplies page. For other agencies' figures and storage, see How much water to store per person per day? and Water storage containers.
Is Hungary short of water?
In WRI's Aqueduct 4.0 model, the population-weighted median of Hungarian cities is in the "low" category for water stress today and in the 2050 business-as-usual projection, but "medium to high" for drought risk 5. These are city medians: a given town can sit higher or lower.
The national water directorate's drought monitoring system lets you type any Hungarian settlement and see data from the nearest drought station; in winter the stations update about every 6 hours 4. Phaenyx found no national page listing current water-use restrictions. See Drought preparedness.
What if I have a private well?
NNGYK's guide for municipalities warns that most private wells are shallow groundwater wells exposed to surface pollution, and that their water is more often unfit than tap water 2. The main problems are faecal contamination from septic seepage and nitrate and pesticide residues from farming 2. Nitrate above the limit is especially dangerous for infants and small children; in recent decades such illness in Hungary has been caused only by private well water, not by piped water 2. The guide adds that a well's operator must have its water tested for the main contamination parameters at least once every three years 2. See Private well emergencies.
What should I do after a flood?
NNGYK's flood advice: do not use private wells in or near flooded areas for drinking or for household uses such as bathing, washing or dishwashing 1. Infants and small children should drink bottled water where possible, and wells must be disinfected before use once the flood has passed 1. Tap water may taste of chlorine for a while, because flooded waterworks raise chlorine levels 1. See Water safety after a flood. A household plan can keep your water stock, local contacts and warning channels in one place.
