Short answer. In Indonesia, the disaster agency BNPB asks every family to keep a 72-hour emergency bag (Tas Siaga 72 Jam) near the exit, ready to grab in 10 seconds, with at least 2 litres of drinking water per person per day 1. BMKG must issue a first tsunami warning in under 3 minutes 3. 112 is the single emergency number, rolled out region by region 4. Verified on 2026-10-20.

Who is responsible for civil preparedness in Indonesia?

BNPB (Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana) leads national disaster management, with provincial and district disaster agencies (BPBD) at local level. BMKG runs the Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning System (InaTEWS) and issues earthquake, tsunami and weather warnings 3. BAPETEN is the nuclear regulator. BNPB runs a 24-hour disaster call centre on 117 5 and publishes hazard maps on inaRISK (https://inarisk.bnpb.go.id/).

What is on each page?

  • Emergency supplies: the BNPB 72-hour bag, 2 litres of water per person per day, where to keep it and how often to check it 1.
  • Kit: the official BNPB list, item by item.
  • Public shelters: Indonesia has no blast or fallout shelters; public protection relies on tsunami evacuation buildings and hills (TES), assembly points and evacuation routes. The national count of TES is not confirmed.
  • Alerts: BMKG's tsunami warning timeline, sirens, the SIRITA app, SMS blast and digital TV warnings. No national cell broadcast system was found in operation.
  • Iodine: Indonesia has no nuclear power plant; a 2012 regulation lists iodine tablets among nuclear emergency actions 6, but no public distribution or sale rule was found. Not fully confirmed.
  • Build a shelter: no rules on private shelters were found; ordinary building permits apply.
  • Emergency contacts: 112, plus police 110, fire 113, ambulance 118, search and rescue 115 and BNPB 117.

No separate shelter standards page is published for Indonesia: no standard for civilian shelters was found, and the only related document identified (a 2023 tsunami evacuation route guideline) could not be read.

Is there a national preparedness booklet?

Yes. In 2026 BNPB published Keluarga Siaga Bencana: Panduan Anti Panik Saat Gempa, Banjir & Krisis Darurat (first printing), a family guide with the 72-hour bag checklist, a family emergency plan and earthquake, tsunami and flood procedures 1. It follows BNPB's 2012 pocket guide Tanggap Tangkas Tangguh Menghadapi Bencana 2.

What is the most important rule on the coast?

After an earthquake near the coast, BNPB calls the first 10 minutes "golden" for reaching high ground and says to evacuate without waiting for official instructions 1. Strong or vertical shaking, the sea receding or a roaring sound are reasons to go at once 1. See /guides/tsunami.

Where do I start?

Pack the 72-hour bag first (kit), agree on a main and a backup assembly point outside the home 1, find your nearest TES or high ground with your BPBD or neighbourhood (RT/RW), and write down the emergency numbers (emergency contacts). For a household plan, see /guides/family-plan; for the hazards most relevant to the country, see /guides/earthquake-preparedness, /guides/tsunami, /guides/flood-preparedness and /guides/volcanic-ash.

Frequently asked questions

How long should an Indonesian household be prepared for?

72 hours. BNPB notes that families may have to cope alone for the first 24 to 72 hours after a disaster 1.

What is the emergency number in Indonesia?

112 is the single emergency number, but it has been rolled out region by region since 2016 and may not be active everywhere 4. Police 110, fire 113 and ambulance 118 remain the direct numbers 4.

Does Indonesia have public bomb shelters?

No network of blast or fallout shelters was found. Public protection relies on tsunami evacuation buildings and hills in coastal areas, and on local assembly points and evacuation routes 17.
