Short answer. Phaenyx found no national system of boil-water or do-not-drink notices in Indonesia: if your tap water becomes unsafe, expect the notice locally. BNPB asks families to keep at least 2 litres of drinking water per person per day in a 72-hour emergency bag 1. BMKG publishes meteorological drought warnings every ten days, by regency and city, on three levels 2.
How do I know if my tap water is unsafe?
Expect any warning from your local water company or local government, and keep their contact details with your emergency papers. Phaenyx found no national list or register of boil-water or do-not-drink notices for Indonesia. How official warnings reach you is explained on our Indonesia alerts page.
If you are told to boil water or not to drink it, follow the local instruction. See What to do during a boil-water notice, Do-not-drink notices and How to purify water.
How much water should I store?
BNPB, the national disaster management agency, asks every family to keep a 72-hour emergency bag (Tas Siaga 72 Jam) with at least 2 litres of drinking water per person per day 1. BNPB explains that families may have to cope on their own for the first 24 to 72 hours 1.
| Household | Minimum drinking water for 72 hours 1 |
|---|---|
| 1 person | 6 litres |
| 2 people | 12 litres |
| 4 people | 24 litres |
That figure covers drinking only. The full BNPB list is on our Indonesia emergency supplies page; for storage, see How much water per person per day? and Water storage containers.
Is Indonesia short of water?
BMKG tracks it. Its meteorological drought warning is issued per dasarian (ten-day period) and lists regencies and cities at three levels: Waspada, Siaga and Awas 2. The warning for the last ten days of October 2026 covered regencies and cities in 21 provinces, including Bali, Central Java, East Java, East Nusa Tenggara and Central Sulawesi 2. Check the current list for your regency before the dry season and during it.
In WRI's Aqueduct 4.0 model, the population-weighted median of Indonesian cities is in the "high" category for water stress today and in the 2050 business-as-usual projection, and "medium to high" for drought risk 3. These are city medians: a given town can sit higher or lower.
Phaenyx found no national water restriction order for Indonesia; restrictions, if any, are local. See Drought preparedness and Living without running water.
What if I have a private well?
If a well may be contaminated, for example after a flood, treat the water before drinking (How to purify water) and see Private well emergencies. Phaenyx found no official national guidance on household wells (sumur) for Indonesia.
What should I do after a flood?
Follow local instructions and see Water safety after a flood. A household plan can keep your water stock, local contacts and warning channels in one place.
