Are there public shelters in Qatar?

Qatar publishes no public shelter network or locator. The Interior Ministry tells residents to shelter in safe areas inside buildings, away from windows.

Updated 2026-10-20· 3 official sources

Short answer. Qatar publishes no public shelter network and no shelter locator. The official instruction from the Ministry of Interior is to remain in safe areas inside the building you are in and to stay away from windows and open spaces 1. There is no address to look up: you shelter in place, in the safest part of your home, workplace or the building where you are.

Does Qatar have public bomb or fallout shelters?

No public shelter network or official locator was found. During the 2026 alerts, the Ministry of Interior did not direct people to public shelters; it told them to "remain in safe areas inside buildings" and "stay away from windows and open spaces" 1.

Which places inside a building are safest?

On 7 March 2026, local newspapers reported a Ministry of Interior advisory listing safe and unsafe indoor locations 23. Phaenyx has not been able to read the original Ministry post, so this list is shown as reported by the press and remains to be confirmed against the official text.

Reported as safe 23 Reported as unsafe 23
Basements Near external walls
Interior rooms Close to glass windows or facades
Hallways or corridors Rooftops
Spaces under staircases Open areas

The Peninsula quotes the advisory as follows: "Basements, interior rooms, hallways or corridors as well as spaces under staircases are considered as safe locations to seek shelter" 2.

The part confirmed directly by the Qatar News Agency is shorter: stay in safe areas inside buildings, away from windows and open spaces 1.

What about older shelter lists?

Older press reports (around 2016) said Civil Defence had designated schools, stadiums, offices, clubs and apartments as shelters for natural disasters. No current official list was found, so Phaenyx does not present these places as shelters today.

How should I choose a spot in advance?

Before any alert, it helps to identify the room in your home or workplace that is furthest from external walls and glass, and to know how to reach it quickly. This follows the logic of the official instruction 1; it is not an additional official rule. Our guides explain the general principles:

When can I leave the safe area?

The Ministry of Interior says to avoid going outside until a notification is issued indicating the removal of the security threat 1. See Qatar emergency alerts.
