How do emergency alerts work in Qatar?

Qatar's Ministry of Interior sends mobile alerts that reach all phones, even on silent. Stay indoors in a safe area until the threat is declared over.

Updated 2026-10-20· 3 official sources

Short answer. Qatar warns the public through a mobile National Early Warning System run by the Ministry of Interior. Alerts reach all phones, even on silent, and are sent only when an urgent warning is needed 1. When an alert arrives, follow its instructions, stay inside in a safe area away from windows, and do not go out until a notification says the threat has been removed 2.

What is Qatar's National Early Warning System?

It is a mobile alert system operated by the Ministry of Interior (MOI) 1. According to the MOI, as reported by the Qatar News Agency (QNA):

Feature Detail
Operator Ministry of Interior 1
Channel Messages pushed to mobile phones 1
Reach All devices, including phones on silent mode 1
When it is used Only when an urgent warning is needed to protect lives and property; not for routine or awareness messages 1
Tests Test messages were sent during fog in February 2026 to check efficiency, alert levels and delivery speed 1

The MOI stresses the importance of responding to these alerts 1.

What should I do when I receive an alert?

The MOI's instructions during the 2026 alerts were 2:

  1. Comply with the instructions in the message.
  2. Remain in safe areas inside buildings.
  3. Stay away from windows and open spaces.
  4. Wait for the all-clear. In the MOI's words, "avoid going outside until a notification is issued indicating the removal of the security threat" 2.

There is no separate "all-clear" siren in the official information: the end of the threat is announced by a notification 2. For a general explanation of what to do during an air-raid style warning, see What should I do during an air-raid alert?.

Which indoor places count as safe?

The MOI's instruction is to stay in safe areas inside the building you are in, away from windows and open spaces 2. A more detailed list of safe and unsafe indoor locations, reported by the local press in March 2026, is discussed on our Qatar public shelters page, with the caveat that the original MOI post has not been checked.

Does Qatar have outdoor sirens?

No official information was found on a national outdoor siren network. The official channel described by the MOI is the mobile alert that reaches all phones 1.

Is there an alert app?

There is no dedicated alert app: alerts are pushed directly to phones 1. Metrash2 is the Ministry of Interior's e-services app; it is not described as an alert channel. Its contact line, 2342000, is listed with other numbers on our Qatar emergency contacts page.

Who is responsible?

The Ministry of Interior runs the alert system, and its General Directorate of Civil Defence is one of its departments 3. Information on the Civil Defence directorate is on the MOI portal 3.

How can I prepare before an alert?

These are general preparedness guides, not Qatari official instructions; the official instruction remains to follow the alert message itself 2.
