Air quality in Qatar: where to check and what to do

Check Qatar's air on the MECC Air quality portal. The national AQI runs 0-500 in six colour levels; city fine-particle levels are far above WHO's.

Short answer. The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) links to its Air quality portal from its home page 1. Qatar's ambient air quality index runs from 0 to 500 in six colour levels, from green "Good" to purple "Extremely Polluted", following the US EPA system 2. City air is heavily polluted on average: fine particles are about fifteen times the WHO guideline, with desert dust a major source 235.

Where can I check air quality right now?

On MECC's Air quality portal, linked from the ministry's home page 1. The index is built from data sent by the monitoring stations of the national air quality monitoring network 2. Phaenyx found no official air quality alert service for the public, so checking the portal yourself is the way to know.

What do the index levels mean?

MECC's index covers fine particles and dust (PM10 and PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, ground-level ozone and carbon monoxide 2. Green indicates clean air, and the closer the colour gets to red, the more polluted the air 2. The official levels 2:

AQI Official level 2
0-50 Good
51-100 Normal
101-150 Less than Normal
151-200 Limited Polluted
201-300 Polluted
301-500 Extremely Polluted

Phaenyx found no health advice attached to each level in MECC's index document. For what each band usually means for health, see Air quality index explained.

How polluted is the air on average?

Heavily. The population-weighted median of Qatari cities shows about 77 µg/m³ of PM2.5 (annual mean 2021-2023) 3, against a WHO guideline of 5 µg/m³ 5. MECC notes that particles come either from natural sources, especially in desert areas and during dust storms, or from human activity 2. Nitrogen dioxide is about 25 µg/m³ 4, two and a half times the WHO guideline of 10 µg/m³ 5. That NO2 figure is a regional background over roughly 80 km: a busy road will be higher, and MECC names vehicles in the city centre and traffic jams as the main source 2.

What should I do on a bad air day, or with dust?

A household plan can list who in your home is sensitive to polluted air and which room to keep closed on bad days.

Frequently asked questions

Is Qatar's AQI the same as the US AQI?

MECC says the index follows the system adopted by the US Environmental Protection Agency and national standards, with its own level names 2.

Which pollutants does the index cover?

PM10 and PM2.5, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, ground-level ozone and carbon monoxide 2.

Is PM2.5 in Qatar above the WHO guideline?

Yes. The city median is about 77 µg/m³ per year 3, against 5 µg/m³ 5.

Why is particle pollution so high?

MECC names natural sources, especially desert areas and dust storms, as well as human activity 2.
