Updated 2026-10-20· 5 official sources

Short answer. No nationwide public warning system was confirmed as operational in Malta on 20 October 2026. A mobile operator's table lists Malta's warning channel as cell broadcast, without further detail 2, and a February 2026 government press release mentions "ongoing work on the Reverse 112 system" 3. Sirens were tested only locally, in Marsaxlokk, in 2023 4.

Who is responsible for warning the public?

The European Commission's profile of Malta's disaster management system states: "The early warning process to the public is the responsibility of the organisation or entity that is conducting its operations as stated in the pertinent legislation and the relative risk assessment." 1 In other words, there is no single warning channel described for all hazards.

Does Malta use cell broadcast alerts?

Not confirmed. The public warning table published by the mobile operator GO plc lists Malta with access "Mobile" and system "Cell Broadcast", with no further detail 2. This is an operator page, not a government source, and it does not say whether alerts have been sent or how they appear.

A government press release of 11 February 2026, on European 112 Day, refers to "ongoing work on the Reverse 112 system" 3. Phaenyx saw this only as a search result: the page could not be opened on 20 October 2026. Phaenyx does not state when or whether such a system is in service.

Are there sirens in Malta?

No national siren network or signal meanings were found. Public sirens were tested locally in Marsaxlokk during the NEAMWave23 tsunami exercise in November 2023, according to the European Committee of the Regions 4. For general tsunami advice, see Tsunami preparedness.

Is there an official alert app?

No official Maltese alert app was found.

How do I get updates in practice?

The Civil Protection Department uses its official Facebook page, Civil Protection Malta, for public updates 5. In an emergency, call 112 5. For general advice on battery or wind-up radios, see Emergency radio.
