Safe water in Malaysia: notices, drought and what to store

In Malaysia, water disruptions are announced by your state water operator. After a flood, boil drinking water or use sealed bottled water.

Short answer. In Malaysia, water supply disruptions are announced by your local water operator on its own channels; Air Selangor, for example, serves Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya 1. Phaenyx found no national register of boil-water or do-not-drink notices. During and after a flood, health authorities say to drink boiled water or bottled water 234. The official emergency bag is meant to last 72 hours but sets no water quantity 56.

How do I know if my tap water is unsafe?

Phaenyx found no national system of boil-water or do-not-drink notices in Malaysia. Air Selangor, for example, supplies only Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya 1, so know which operator serves your address and follow its website and official channels. Air Selangor's "Water Info" service gives "the latest information on water supply status, service disruptions and scheduled maintenance" 1.

Floods are the main moment when tap or well water becomes unsafe. For people in flood evacuation centres, the Ministry of Health (KKM) says to always drink boiled water and to eat only cooked food 2. The National Security Council (MKN) advises avoiding water from contaminated pipes or wells until it has been cleaned or boiled, and boiling water before drinking it or using bottled mineral water 3. During a flood, drink boiled water or bottled drinks 4.

For what to do when water may be unsafe, read What to do during a boil-water notice, Do-not-drink notices and How to purify water. For an outage, see No running water.

How much water should I store?

The official lists do not give a figure. Malaysia's emergency bag, the Beg Kecemasan or Bug Out Bag, is meant to help you last 72 hours 6, and it is aimed above all at households in flood-risk areas 5. Its lists name water but give no quantity 56. Our Malaysia emergency supplies page has the full lists. For reference quantities used by other agencies, see How much water to store per person per day? and Water storage containers; these are not Malaysian rules.

Is Malaysia short of water?

Not on average. In WRI's Aqueduct 4.0 model, the population-weighted median of Malaysian cities is in the "low" category for current water stress and stays "low" in the 2050 business-as-usual projection; drought risk is "medium" 7. These are city medians: a given town or river basin can sit higher or lower.

Phaenyx found no national system of drought water restrictions in Malaysia. Supply interruptions are announced by your water operator, so the same channels apply 1. For household steps, see Drought preparedness.

What if I have a private well?

Phaenyx found no official Malaysian guidance for households on testing a private well. After a flood, MKN advises avoiding water from a contaminated well until it has been cleaned or boiled 3. See Private well emergencies.

What should I do after a flood?

Drink boiled water or bottled water, eat only cooked food, keep children out of flood water, and get treatment quickly for fever, diarrhoea or vomiting 234. Prepare food for babies and high-risk people with clean water 3. See Water safety after a flood and our Malaysia alerts page for flood warnings. A household plan can keep your operator's contact details and your water stock in one place.
