Safe water in Luxembourg: notices, drought and what to store

Luxembourg's tap water is tested at the tap by communes and syndicates. Keep at least 6 litres per person; drought phases are set by each commune.

Short answer. Luxembourg's tap water is checked by the communes and water syndicates more than 6,500 times a year, at the tap 1. If it must not be drunk, the public is informed after consultation with the water agency (AGE) 2; Phaenyx found no national list of boil-water notices. Keep at least 6 litres of water per person 3. In droughts, each commune can impose orange or red restrictions 4.

How do I know if my tap water is unsafe?

Drinking water is supplied and tested by the communes and water syndicates, which send their results to the Water Management Administration (AGE) 12. Suppliers must publish their latest test results online, and the reports can also be read on drenkwaasser.lu 12.

If water breaks the legal limits, the supplier must inform the AGE immediately and take corrective action. Any information to the public about a ban or restriction on drinking the water is drawn up in consultation with the AGE 2. Phaenyx found no national register of boil-water or do-not-drink notices: expect the message from your commune or water syndicate, and keep their contact details with your emergency papers. How official warnings reach you is on our Luxembourg alerts page.

If you are told to boil water or not to drink it, follow the local instruction. See What to do during a boil-water notice and Do-not-drink notices.

How much water should I store?

The High Commission for National Protection (HCPN) asks for at least 6 litres of water per person, preferably in small bottles, in a kit for living on your own for "a few days" 3. The list does not say how many days the 6 litres should last. More on our Luxembourg emergency supplies page; for daily amounts and storage, see How much water to store per person per day? and Water storage containers.

Is Luxembourg short of water?

Supply can get tight in hot, dry spells. About half of the drinking water comes from groundwater, through some 300 springs and boreholes, and the other half from the Upper Sûre lake 7. In summer 2026, the AGE declared a national vigilance phase on 13 July and lifted it on 28 August 5. A vigilance phase asks people to save water voluntarily; it brings no compulsory restriction and does not concern water quality 4.

If things get worse, communes take binding measures by communal regulation, with fines 4:

  • Orange phase: bans on non-essential uses, such as washing cars outside professional car washes, filling or refreshing private pools, using pressure washers, and watering lawns, parks and sports grounds 4.
  • Red phase: the orange bans plus stricter ones, including watering private gardens except by hand with a watering can 4.

Neighbouring communes can be in different phases, because each network has its own resources 4. Follow your commune's announcements and the drought plan on the Geoportail 4. See Drought preparedness.

In WRI's Aqueduct 4.0 model, the population-weighted median of Luxembourg's cities is "medium-high" for water stress today, "high" in the 2050 business-as-usual projection, and "medium" for drought risk 6. These are model indicators of pressure on resources, and city medians: a given town can sit higher or lower. WRI's country ranking gives the same bands for water stress, and "low-medium" for drought risk 8.

What about private wells or a flood?

Phaenyx found no official Luxembourg guidance on testing private wells. If a well may be contaminated, see Private well emergencies. After a flood, follow your commune or water syndicate, and see Water safety after a flood. A household plan can keep your water stock, local contacts and warning channels in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Is tap water safe to drink in Luxembourg?

Yes, according to the AGE, which calls tap water the most controlled food in the country 1.

Where can I see my tap water's test results?

On your commune's website and on drenkwaasser.lu 12.

Can my commune ban garden watering?

Yes. In a red phase, watering private gardens can be banned, except by hand with a watering can 4.

Does a vigilance phase affect water quality?

No. It concerns only the quantity of water available 4.
