Air quality in Luxembourg: where to check and what to do

Check Luxembourg's air in near real time on emwelt.lu or the Meng Loft app. Above 180 µg/m³ of ozone, the public is informed and motorways drop to 90 km/h.

Short answer. The Environment Agency (Administration de l'environnement) shows near real-time pollutant levels for every monitoring station, on emwelt.lu and in the Meng Loft app 1. You can subscribe to bulletins and ozone-peak notices by e-mail or SMS 2. Above 180 µg/m³ of ozone, sensitive people face a high health risk and motorway speed drops to 90 km/h 34.

Where can I check air quality right now?

Since 2007, the Environment Agency has published near real-time concentrations of ozone, nitrogen dioxide, fine particles and other pollutants from its stations across the country 1. The same information is in the official "Meng Loft" app for Android and iOS 1.

To be warned, sign up to the agency's subscription service: it sends air quality bulletins and the notices issued when ozone passes the information threshold (180 µg/m³) or the alert threshold (240 µg/m³) 2. MeteoLux also publishes daily weather vigilance notices, including for ozone and PM10 particles 2. How other official warnings reach you is on our Luxembourg alerts page.

What do the index levels mean?

Each station's values are ranked on a national scale from "Excellent" to "Exécrable" (atrocious), each with a colour 1. The agency's scale has ten levels; for fine particles (PM2.5, 24-hour rolling mean) and ozone (hourly), the bands in µg/m³ are 1:

Level PM2.5 Ozone
1 Excellent 0-5 0-30
2 Très bon 5-10 30-50
3 Bon 10-15 50-70
4 Assez bon 15-20 70-90
5 Moyen 20-30 90-110
6 Médiocre 30-40 110-145
7 Très médiocre 40-50 145-180
8 Mauvais 50-60 180-240
9 Très mauvais 60-70 240-360
10 Exécrable > 70 > 360

The same scale covers nitrogen dioxide, PM10 and carbon monoxide 1.

The European Environment Agency's index also covers Luxembourg, with six levels from "good" to "extremely poor", set by the worst of five pollutants 5. For fine particles (PM2.5), "good" is 0-5 µg/m³ and "poor" is 51-90 µg/m³ 5.

EEA level Advice for sensitive people 5
Moderate Consider reducing intense outdoor activities if you have symptoms
Poor Consider reducing physical activities, particularly outdoors, especially with symptoms
Very poor Reduce physical activities, particularly outdoors, especially with symptoms
Extremely poor Avoid physical activities outdoors

The EEA index shows the short-term (hourly) situation, not the long-term one 5. See Air quality index explained.

How polluted is the air on average?

The population-weighted median of Luxembourg's cities shows about 8 µg/m³ of PM2.5 (annual mean 2021-2023) 6, above the WHO guideline of 5 µg/m³ 8. Nitrogen dioxide is about 10.5 µg/m³ 7, close to the WHO guideline of 10 µg/m³ 8. That NO2 figure is a regional background over roughly 80 km: a busy street will be higher.

What should I do on a bad air day, or with smoke or dust?

  • Ozone above 180 µg/m³ (information threshold): high risk for sensitive groups: older people, newborns, children, people with respiratory or heart conditions, and people who exercise or work outdoors 4. Sensitive people should avoid intense physical effort outdoors, especially between noon and midnight; everyone should avoid sustained effort such as jogging 4. Indoors, ozone levels are generally about half 4.
  • At home: air the house early in the morning or late in the evening and keep windows closed, especially in the afternoon 4. Ask your doctor if you have health concerns 4.
  • On the road: from 180 µg/m³, motorway speed is cut to 90 km/h; use public transport where you can and avoid paints and solvent products 4.
  • Ozone above 240 µg/m³ (alert threshold): high risk for the whole population 34. See Ozone days.
  • Smoke or dust: Phaenyx found no official Luxembourg guidance on wildfire smoke or dust. See Wildfire smoke, A clean-air room at home, Masks for smoke and Dust storms.

A household plan can note who at home is sensitive to polluted air and where to stay on bad days.

Frequently asked questions

Does Luxembourg have its own air quality scale?

Yes. Station values are ranked on ten levels, from "Excellent" to "Exécrable", each with a colour 1.

How often is the ozone alert threshold reached?

Rarely. It was exceeded locally at Vianden in August 2003, on 2 July 2015 and on 20 June 2017; no information-threshold exceedance was recorded from 2020 to 2025 3.

Can I get pollution warnings by SMS?

Yes. The Environment Agency's subscription service sends bulletins and ozone-peak notices by e-mail or SMS 24.
