Are there public shelters in Chile? Evacuation maps explained

Chile has no public blast or fallout shelters. SENAPRED's evacuation maps show evacuation areas, routes, meeting points and safe areas.

Updated 2026-10-20· 3 official sources

Short answer. Chile has no network of public blast or fallout shelters, and no national authority publishes one. Public protection is organised around evacuation: municipal evacuation maps show evacuation areas, routes, meeting points and safe areas, mainly for tsunami, volcano and wildfire, and you can search them by address in SENAPRED's Visor Chile Preparado map 123.

Does Chile have bomb or fallout shelters?

No national authority publishes any public blast or fallout shelter in Chile 123. The official model is evacuation away from the hazard, not sheltering in a protective structure. If you are looking for guidance on protection from radioactive fallout in general, read our guides on sheltering in place or evacuating and the 7-10 rule for fallout.

How do I find my evacuation area and meeting point?

Two SENAPRED tools answer this:

  • Planos de Evacuación: the evacuation map of your commune 1.
  • Visor Chile Preparado: enter your address to see evacuation areas, meeting points and evacuation routes 3.

Check both before an emergency, walk the route at least once, and note the meeting point in your family plan. Our family plan guide explains how.

What is a meeting point, and what is a safe area?

SENAPRED uses two distinct terms 2:

Term Meaning
Punto de Encuentro (meeting point) A gathering place outside the tsunami evacuation area where evacuees arrive to be safe
Área de Seguridad (safe area) The lowest-risk place relative to the threat, outside the evacuation area; not necessarily marked out

In SENAPRED's words: "Un Punto de Encuentro es un lugar de reunión, ubicado fuera del Área de Evacuación por tsunami, donde arriban los/as evacuados a fin de ponerlos a resguardo" 2.

Should I go up a tall building during a tsunami?

Only as a second option. SENAPRED's rule is to prefer horizontal evacuation to a meeting point or safe area; vertical evacuation, to buildings of at least eight floors, comes second 2. If you are in a tsunami evacuation area, a quake that makes it hard to stand, or the sea receding unusually, is itself the signal to leave immediately for high ground 2. See our tsunami guide and the Chile alerts page.

What about temporary lodging after a disaster?

Temporary shelters (albergues), often in schools, are reportedly opened locally after a disaster, but none of the sources we checked describes them, and we found no national list or standing count. Follow instructions from your commune and SENAPRED at the time of the event.

Frequently asked questions

Can I shelter in a metro station or underground car park?

No official Chilean source designates such places as shelters. SENAPRED's guidance is to follow your commune's evacuation map 13.

Do evacuation maps cover earthquakes?

SENAPRED's maps focus mainly on tsunami, volcano and wildfire evacuation 13. For earthquakes themselves, see our earthquake preparedness guide.

Is a safe area always signposted?

Not necessarily. SENAPRED defines a safe area as the lowest-risk place relative to the threat, which need not be marked out 2. Look it up in advance on the map.

Are there volcano and wildfire routes too?

Yes, the evacuation maps cover tsunami, volcano and wildfire hazards 13. See our volcanic ash and wildfire smoke guides.
