Short answer. Chile is short of water: the median Chilean city is in the "extremely high" water-stress category, today and in 2050 4. The Dirección General de Aguas declares water scarcity zones by decree; five were in force in October 2026 1. SENAPRED asks households to keep supplies for 48 to 72 hours, with 2 litres of water per person per day 23.

How do I know if my tap water in Chile is unsafe?

Watch announcements from your water company and your municipality, and keep official alerts switched on (see our Chile alerts page). If you are told the water is unsafe, follow our guides on a boil-water notice or a do-not-drink notice. If the tap runs dry, see no running water.

How much water should I store in Chile?

SENAPRED's kit page says households should have basic supplies for 48 to 72 hours, and sets water at 2 litres per person per day 2. Its Plan Familia Preparada manual recommends a kit that keeps the family self-sufficient for 72 hours 3. That is 6 litres per person, or 24 litres for a household of four. The kit page lists chlorine or water purification tablets among the extended supplies 2. Details are on our Chile emergency supplies page; see also water per person, water storage containers and water purification.

Is Chile short of water?

Yes, in much of the country. Using the World Resources Institute's Aqueduct 4.0 data, the median Chilean city sits in the "extremely high" baseline water-stress category today and in the 2050 business-as-usual projection, with "medium" drought risk 4. These are population-weighted medians across 302 cities; local conditions vary widely.

The government responds with water scarcity decrees (decretos de escasez hídrica). The DGA says they are issued to give water users and the population "herramientas" (tools) "para reducir al mínimo los daños derivados de la sequía", to keep drought damage to a minimum 1. The decrees in force listed on 27 October 2026 cover 1:

Area Region Expires
Elqui province Coquimbo 13 July 2027
Limarí province Coquimbo 10 July 2027
Choapa province Coquimbo 24 July 2027
Lluta Bajo aquifer sector Arica y Parinacota 24 July 2027
Chiloé province Los Lagos 16 March 2027

The DGA also publishes a map of decrees in force and a spreadsheet of all decrees since 2008 1. See drought preparedness.

What about private wells and floods?

Phaenyx found no official Chilean guidance on testing household wells. If you rely on one, see private well emergency. After a flood, see water after a flood.

Your household plan can record your water company's contact and where your stored water is kept.
