Short answer. No public list of boil-water or do-not-drink notices was found in the UAE. In Abu Dhabi, water quality is set by the Department of Energy's regulations, which reflect WHO guidance, and suppliers must report water quality incidents to the regulator 1. NCEMA asks for a week of drinking water in the earthquake survival kit 2. Water stress in UAE cities is "extremely high" 3.

How do I know if my tap water is unsafe?

There is no national page of boil-water notices to check. What exists is regulation. In Abu Dhabi, the Water Quality Regulations 2021, in force since 1 January 2021, are intended to provide for the supply of wholesome drinking water and reflect the current guidance of the World Health Organization 1. They apply to all licensees, entities and consumers who operate or receive wholesome water 1. Licensees must report water quality incidents to the DoE 1.

Many buildings store water in tanks before it reaches the tap. The regulations are to be read with a separate Code of Practice for the Inspection and Cleaning of Customer Water Storage Tanks 1. If you rent, ask your building management when the tank was last inspected and cleaned.

If the authorities or your supplier tell you not to drink the water, follow the local instruction. See What to do during a boil-water notice, Do-not-drink notices and our UAE alerts page for how official warnings reach you.

How much water should I store?

NCEMA's guide asks for enough drinking water and canned or dried food for a whole week in the earthquake survival kit 2. It gives no litres per person per day, and lists bottled water among kit items to be checked for expiry and replaced regularly 2. Details are on our UAE emergency supplies page. For daily volumes used by other agencies, see How much water to store per person per day? and Water storage containers.

Is the UAE short of water?

Yes, on the natural-resource side. In WRI's Aqueduct 4.0 model, the population-weighted median of UAE cities falls in the "extremely high" category for current water stress, stays "extremely high" in the 2050 business-as-usual projection, and is "medium" for drought risk 3. These are city medians: a given area can sit higher or lower. Because supply depends on plants, pipes and power, a stored supply at home is the practical buffer during an outage. See No running water at home and Drought preparedness.

What should I do after a flood?

Follow official instructions on tap water. For what to do with your water after flooding, see Water safety after a flood and How to purify water. A household plan can keep your water stock and emergency contacts in one place.
