Short answer. In Turkey, drinking water is supplied by the local administration, which must keep consumers informed; if water use is restricted, warnings go out through the media or the internet 1. Phaenyx found no national register of boil-water notices, so watch your municipality's announcements. AFAD asks households to pack enough drinking water for each family member 2. Turkey's cities sit in WRI's "extremely high" water-stress category 3.
How do I know if my tap water is unsafe?
Turkey's drinking-water regulation (İnsani Tüketim Amaçlı Sular Hakkında Yönetmelik) makes the local administration (mahalli idare), meaning the municipality or provincial administration, responsible for supplying drinking water 1. Under Article 14 ("Bilgilendirme"), the local administration must give consumers adequate and up-to-date information on drinking water, and a report on water quality is published every three years 1. When water breaches the standards, the provincial public health directorate (Müdürlük) decides what to do, which can include banning or restricting its use, and consumers are informed and warned through print and broadcast media or the internet (Article 11) 1. The directorate also prepares the monitoring programmes 1.
In practice, this means the warning comes from your city's water administration, not from a national service. Phaenyx found no national list or feed of boil-water or do-not-drink notices for Turkey. Know the name of your water administration and follow its website and social media.
If you are told to boil water or not to drink it, follow the local instruction. For what each kind of notice means, read What to do during a boil-water notice and Do-not-drink notices. If the taps run dry, see No running water.
How much water should I store?
AFAD gives no volume. Its emergency-bag checklist says: "Her bir aile üyesi düşünülerek yeterli içme suyu alınmalı", enough drinking water should be taken with each family member in mind 2. The bag is meant for the first 72 hours after an earthquake 2. See our Turkey emergency supplies page for the full list. If you want a planning figure, How much water to store per person per day? compares the volumes published by other agencies; it is not a Turkish rule. For storage, see Water storage containers.
Is Turkey short of water?
Yes, on the main global measure. In WRI's Aqueduct 4.0 model, the population-weighted median of Turkish cities falls in the "extremely high" category for current water stress, stays "extremely high" in the 2050 business-as-usual projection, and is "medium-high" for drought risk, on WRI's separate drought scale 3. These are city medians: a given town or basin can sit higher or lower.
To follow current conditions, the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM) publishes monthly meteorological drought maps based on the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), over 3, 6, 9, 12 and 24 months 4. For household steps such as saving water and keeping a stock ahead of cuts, see Drought preparedness.
What should I do after a flood or earthquake?
After a flood, do not assume tap water is safe until your water administration says so, and see Water safety after a flood. If you have to treat water yourself, see Water purification and Emergency water filters. A household plan can put your water stock and local contacts in one place.
