Safe water in South Korea: notices, drought and what to store

South Korea's National Drought Information Portal shows drought stages by city and county. Phaenyx found no official household water quantity.

Updated 2026-10-27· 5 official sources· 한국어로 읽기

Short answer. Phaenyx found no national list of boil-water or do-not-drink notices for South Korea: follow your local water supplier's instructions. The National Drought Information Portal shows the current drought stage for each city and county, with what residents are asked to do at each stage 34. Phaenyx found no official per-person amount of water for households to store.

How do I know if my tap water is unsafe?

Phaenyx found no single national register or feed of boil-water or do-not-drink notices in South Korea. Follow the instructions of your local water supplier and city or county office. For what each kind of notice means at home, read What to do during a boil-water notice and Do-not-drink notices.

Water quality itself is published openly. K-water releases hourly readings for its treatment plants (정수장), covering residual chlorine, pH and turbidity, so that utilities and local officials can spot a drop in quality early 1. For how to read a utility's results, see Tap water quality reports. Emergency alerts reach phones as disaster texts: see our South Korea alerts page.

How much water should I store?

Phaenyx found no official per-person amount for home water storage in South Korea; see our South Korea emergency supplies page for the official kit lists. For public supply, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) says civil defence emergency water facilities are meant to supply residents with 25 litres of basic water a day when the mains fail, until they are restored, and that their water quality is tested regularly through the city, county or district 2. That is a target for public facilities, not a home-storage rule. For a household reference, see How much water to store per person per day? and Water storage containers.

Is South Korea short of water?

Moderately. In WRI's Aqueduct 4.0 model, the population-weighted median of South Korean cities falls in the "medium to high" category for current water stress, stays "medium to high" in the 2050 business-as-usual projection, and is "medium" for drought risk 5. These are city medians: a given town or river basin can sit higher or lower.

The National Drought Information Portal tracks conditions across 167 cities and counties and shows how many are in drought or under emergency water supply (restricted supply or water delivery); check it for the current figures 3. Its action guide sets four stages for household and industrial water 4:

Stage What the portal asks of residents 4
관심 (attention, mild drought) Check for wasted water at home
주의 (caution, moderate drought) Save water in daily life
경계 (alert, severe drought) Install water-saving fittings and minimise use
심각 (serious, extreme drought) Share private wells, take part in restricted supply and other national measures

For household steps, see Drought preparedness and No running water.

What if I have a private well?

Phaenyx found no official national guidance on testing private drinking wells in South Korea. In an extreme drought, the portal asks owners of private wells to share them 4. See Private well emergencies.

What should I do after a flood?

Follow your local water supplier's instructions, and see Water safety after a flood and Water purification. A household plan can keep your water stock, alert settings and supplier contact in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I check drought in my area?

On the National Drought Information Portal, which reports drought by city and county 3.

What happens in an extreme drought?

At the 심각 (serious) stage, residents are asked to share private wells and take part in restricted supply and other national measures 4.

How much water does South Korea recommend per person?

Phaenyx found no official household figure. Public civil defence water facilities are meant to supply residents with 25 litres of basic water a day 2.

Is tap water quality published?

Yes. K-water publishes hourly residual chlorine, pH and turbidity for its treatment plants 1.
