Safe water in Kazakhstan: notices, drought and what to store

Kazakhstan has no national list of boil-water notices. MChS advises 3-4 litres of water per person in a three-day alarm suitcase.

Short answer. Phaenyx found no national public list of boil-water or do-not-drink notices in Kazakhstan. The Ministry of Emergency Situations (MChS) advises an alarm suitcase with what you need for three days, starting with 3-4 litres of water per person 1. Kazhydromet issues long-term warnings of abnormally hot or dry weather by region 2. For the median Kazakh city, water stress is low today and expected to rise slightly by 2050 3.

How do I know if my tap water is unsafe?

Phaenyx found no national page of boil-water or do-not-drink notices to check, and no published tap-water quality results from a national authority. If your local authorities or water utility tell you to boil water or not to drink it, follow their instructions.

Kazhydromet, the national hydrometeorological service, monitors the quality of surface water bodies and runs an interactive map of surface water quality 4. That is surface water, not the water coming out of your tap.

For what each kind of notice means in practice, read What to do during a boil-water notice and Do-not-drink notices. For how official warnings reach you, see our Kazakhstan alerts page.

How much water should I store?

MChS says the alarm suitcase (тревожный чемодан) should hold "вещи, необходимые на трое суток" — the things needed for three days — starting with water: 3-4 litres per person 1. For a household of four, that is 12 to 16 litres. Full figures are on our Kazakhstan emergency supplies page; for storage and rotation, see How much water to store per person per day? and Which containers are safe for storing water?.

Is Kazakhstan short of water?

Not today, on average, but the trend matters. In WRI's Aqueduct 4.0 model, the population-weighted median of Kazakh cities falls in the "low" category for current water stress, moves to "low to medium" in the 2050 business-as-usual projection, and is "medium" for drought risk 3. These are city medians: a given town or river basin can sit higher or lower.

To follow current conditions, Kazhydromet publishes numbered long-term storm warnings about abnormally hot, cold or dry weather and heavy rain, by region of the country 2. In June and July 2026 these included several warnings of strong heat, among them for the east, south-east and south 2. Phaenyx found no national public water-restriction notices. For household steps, see Drought preparedness.

What should I do after a flood?

Follow official instructions on tap water. For what to do with your water after flooding, see Water safety after a flood and How to purify water. If you rely on a private well, see Private well emergencies; Phaenyx found no official Kazakh guidance on private wells. A household plan can keep your water stock and emergency contacts in one place.
