Safe water in France: notices, drought and what to store

France's ARS test tap water and publish results by commune. VigiEau shows drought restrictions. Store 6 litres of bottled water per person.

Short answer. In France, tap water is checked by the Regional Health Agencies (ARS), and the results are published commune by commune on the health ministry's site eaupotable.sante.gouv.fr 1. Drought restrictions are set by prefects at four levels, from vigilance to crisis, and can be looked up on VigiEau 3. The national guide asks each household to keep 6 litres of bottled water per person for a 72-hour kit 2.

How do I know if my tap water is unsafe?

Start with the test results for your commune. The ARS run the official health control of tap water, with samples analysed by laboratories approved by the health ministry: over 300,000 samples and about 12 million analyses a year 1. The results are published commune by commune on eaupotable.sante.gouv.fr 1. They are linked to your distribution unit (UDI), a section of network where water quality is considered uniform 1.

The open-data compilation is updated monthly, one month after the fact 1, so it is not an alert. When the use of tap water is restricted, the body responsible for producing or distributing the water informs the population immediately with the necessary advice, in liaison with the mayor, the prefect and the ARS, as the ARS of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region explains 6. We found no national register of boil-water or do-not-drink notices to check: watch the announcements of your commune and your water supplier, and keep official alerts on (see our France alerts page).

If a notice is issued, follow it to the letter. For what each kind of notice means, read What to do during a boil-water notice, Do-not-drink notices and How to read a tap water quality report.

How much water should I store?

The SGDSN guide "Tous responsables" says the first 72 hours of a crisis are often the hardest. Its 72-hour kit lists 6 litres of bottled drinking water per person and, as a last resort, water decontamination tablets 2. Details are on our France emergency supplies page; for storage and rotation, see How much water to store per person per day?.

Is France short of water?

Not nationally today, but drought is a real risk. In WRI's Aqueduct 4.0 model, the median of French cities (weighted by population) is "low to medium" for current water stress, rises to "medium to high" in the 2050 business-as-usual projection, and is "medium to high" for drought risk 5. These are city medians: some basins sit well above them.

When water runs short, prefects can limit or suspend non-priority uses of water at four levels 3:

Level What it means 3
Vigilance Households and businesses are urged to save water; no restriction
Alerte Restrictions on watering, filling and emptying pools, washing vehicles and crop irrigation
Alerte renforcée Stronger restrictions on the same uses
Crise Priority uses are protected; many domestic uses are banned

VigiEau, updated every day, maps all water restriction orders nationwide and shows the order that applies to you 3. A general restriction order must also be posted at the town hall of each commune concerned 4. See Drought preparedness.

Private wells and floods

If your household drinks from a private well, see Private well emergencies. After a flood, do not assume tap water or well water is safe; read Water safety after a flood. A household plan can keep your water stock, alert settings and local contacts in one place.
