How much water and food should you store in Croatia?

Croatia's Civil Protection Directorate asks for water and food for at least 2 days, with 1.5 to 2 litres of water per person per day.

Updated 2026-10-20· 2 official sources

Short answer. Croatia's Civil Protection Directorate does not publish a duration for a home stockpile. Its official list is an evacuation survival kit (komplet za preživljavanje) with plain bottled water and food for at least 2 days, counting 1.5 to 2 litres of water per person per day 1. For 2 days, that is 3 to 4 litres per person.

How much water does Croatia recommend?

The Directorate's wording is: "voda - pakirana, obična, najmanje za 2 dana (1,5 -2 litre po danu)", meaning bottled plain water for at least 2 days, 1.5 to 2 litres per day 1.

Household 2 days at 1.5 L per day 2 days at 2 L per day
1 person 3 L 4 L
2 people 6 L 8 L
4 people 12 L 16 L

The table only multiplies the official figure. The Directorate gives no separate amount for cooking or washing 1. Our water per person guide compares this figure with other agencies.

What food should go in the kit?

Dehydrated or canned food for at least 2 days, of the kind you normally eat, and not too salty or too sugary 1. Add a can opener 1. If you have pets, include food and supplies for them 1. The 2023 citizens' brochure adds items for babies, older people or people with disabilities in the household, such as baby food and nappies 2.

See food shelf life and cooking without power for storage and preparation.

Is there an official figure for a longer home stockpile?

No. Croatia's official list is built around evacuation: a kit you can take with you, with water and food for at least 2 days 1. The Directorate publishes no figure for a stockpile of a week or more at home 12. Households that want a longer reserve can read our two-week supplies guide, which draws on other countries' agencies, not on Croatian advice.

What else does the survival kit include?

Beyond water and food, the Directorate lists hygiene items, medical supplies and medicines, a power bank, a battery radio with spare batteries, a torch, a whistle, matches or a lighter, rubbish bags, adhesive tape, money, documents, phone numbers on paper, a sleeping bag or blanket, and a map with evacuation routes marked in advance 1. The 2023 brochure adds warm clothing and footwear, a raincoat, a knife, candles, a notepad and pencil, the health insurance card and medical records, insect repellent and a rubber or PVC ground mat 2.

The full list is on our Croatia kit checklist.
