How much food and water should you store in Lithuania?

Lithuania's LT72 advice: 72 hours of food and water, 12 litres of drinking water per person, and an evacuation bag of about 45 litres per family member.

Short answer. Lithuania's Fire and Rescue Department tells households to keep food and water for 72 hours, including 12 litres of drinking water per person for those 72 hours 1. Each family member should also have their own evacuation bag of about 45 litres that covers at least 72 hours, weighing no more than one fifth of their body weight 2.

How much water does Lithuania recommend?

The LT72 food-stock page says: "Consider the amount of supplies of drinking water, i.e. 12 litres of water for one person per 72 hours" 1. It suggests storing it in small bottles 1.

Household Water for 72 hours
1 person 12 litres
2 people 24 litres
4 people 48 litres

For the evacuation bag, the guidance is different: about 2 to 4 litres of water per day, in small containers such as 0.5-litre bottles, for drinking, cooking and hygiene 2. For how needs change with heat, health and activity, see how much water to store per person.

What food should I keep?

The LT72 list names canned meat, canned vegetables (legumes are suggested), other canned goods such as condensed milk and fruit, groats, oil, sugar, spices, salt, honey and tea, plus a tin opener 1. It does not give quantities for each item: the target is a 72-hour stock 1. Canned fish is not recommended 1.

How should the stock be kept?

The LT72 advice is practical 1:

  • Store food in a dry, dark place.
  • Put new stock behind the old, so the oldest is eaten first.
  • Name one family member as responsible for the food stock.

For rotation and storage life, see food shelf life.

What goes in the evacuation bag?

Each family member should have their own bag, about 45 litres in size and no heavier than one fifth of their body weight 2. The official list covers water, 3 days of dry rations (freeze-dried or dehydrated), a 7-day reserve of prescribed medicines, documents and copies, seasonal clothing, a first-aid kit with a tourniquet and respiratory protection, a power bank of at least 10,000 mAh, a battery radio and head torch, water purification tablets and a filter, and basic tools 2. People living within 100 km of an operating nuclear power plant should include potassium iodide, to be taken only when instructed 2.

LT72 asks people to check the bag at least twice a year, in November and April, when tyres are changed, and to avoid military-style items 2. The full list, line by line, is on the kit checklist.
