Short answer. Phaenyx found no national public list of boil-water or do-not-drink notices in Brazil: check your state or municipal water company. Drought is tracked monthly by ANA's Monitor de Secas 1. Brazil sets no national water quantity to store; Paraná's civil defence lists 2 litres per person per day and São Paulo asks for three days of drinking water 34.
How do I know if my tap water in Brazil is unsafe?
Phaenyx found no national register of boil-water or do-not-drink notices in Brazil. Watch announcements from your water company, your municipality's channels and official alerts (see our Brazil alerts page). If you are told the water is unsafe, follow our guides on a boil-water notice or a do-not-drink notice. To read your supplier's water-quality results, see tap water quality reports.
How much water should I store in Brazil?
There is no national quantity. Paraná's civil defence lists "Água – 2litros por pessoa, por dia": 2 litres of water per person per day 4. São Paulo's civil defence asks households to store drinking water and non-perishable food for three days 3. Details are on our Brazil emergency supplies page; see also water per person and water storage containers.
Is Brazil short of water?
Not on average, but drought is real and regional. Using the World Resources Institute's Aqueduct 4.0 data, the median Brazilian city sits in the "low" baseline water-stress category today and in the 2050 business-as-usual projection, but with "medium" drought risk 5. These are population-weighted medians across 5,440 cities; local conditions vary widely.
The official drought tool is ANA's Monitor de Secas. Its map "é elaborado mensalmente": it is drawn up every month and tracks whether drought is improving or worsening 1. It uses five severity levels: Fraca (S0), Moderada (S1), Grave (S2), Extrema (S3) and Excepcional (S4) 1.
The Ministry of Health warns that drought can lower the quality of available water and spread water-borne diseases such as diarrhoea, hepatitis A and cholera 2. Its advice includes saving water, watching for dehydration in children and older people, and boiling or treating water for household use in affected areas 2. See drought preparedness and water purification.
What about private wells and floods?
Phaenyx found no official Brazilian guidance on testing household wells. If you rely on one, see private well emergency.
After a flood, the Ministry of Health says to follow local authorities such as the civil defence and fire brigade, and to take care with water, food and hygiene, since diseases such as leptospirosis, tetanus, hepatitis A and acute diarrhoea can spread 6. If anyone has three or more episodes of diarrhoea within 24 hours, seek medical care 6. See water after a flood.
Your household plan can record your water company's contact and where your stored water is kept.
