Safe water in Taiwan: outages, drought and what to store

Taiwan asks households to store at least 3 litres of drinking water per person per day for 7 days. Watch water outages and the WRA drought light.

Short answer. Taiwan's National Public Safety Guide asks each household to store at least 3 litres of drinking water per person per day, for at least 7 days 1. Taiwan Water Corporation publishes water outages daily 2, and the Water Resources Agency (WRA) runs a colour-coded water-supply light that moves from reminders to pressure cuts and rotating supply in a drought 4. Phaenyx found no national register of boil-water notices.

How do I know if my tap water is unsafe?

Environmental authorities sample tap water every month, and the Ministry of Environment (MOENV) publishes the results: sampling point, treatment plant, date, parameter, measured value and the drinking-water standard 3. That tells you about routine quality, not about an incident today.

Phaenyx found no national register or feed of boil-water or do-not-drink notices in Taiwan. The national signal you can follow is water outages: Taiwan Water Corporation publishes daily water-suspension information 2. If you are told locally to boil water or not to drink it, follow that instruction, and read What to do during a boil-water notice and Do-not-drink notices. For what a quality report shows, see How to read a tap water quality report.

How much water should I store?

At least 3 litres of drinking water per person per day, with home supplies for at least 7 days per household 1. The same list includes a simple water-purification device 1. See our Taiwan emergency supplies page for the go-bag figures, and How much water to store per person per day? and Water storage containers for storage and rotation.

Is Taiwan short of water?

Not chronically, but droughts happen. In WRI's Aqueduct 4.0 model, the population-weighted median of Taiwanese cities is "low to medium" for current water stress and for the 2050 business-as-usual projection, and "medium" for drought risk, on WRI's separate drought scale 5. These are city medians: a given supply area can sit higher or lower.

When reservoirs run low, the WRA publishes a water-supply light (水情燈號) 4:

Light What it means 4
Green (水情提醒, reminder) Stronger water-source management and measures prepared
Yellow (減壓供水, reduced pressure) Lower pipe pressure at off-peak and set hours; non-essential uses run by government agencies and state enterprises, such as fountains, irrigation and street washing, stopped
Orange (減量供水, reduced quantity) Large non-industrial users (over 1,000 units a month) cut by 20%, industry by 5-20%; pools, car washes and saunas cut by 20%
Red (分區供水或定點供水, rotating or point supply) Supply stopped by rotating zones or at set times across an area, or delivered at fixed points, where residents' basic needs come first

For household steps, see Drought preparedness and No running water.

What should I do after a flood or typhoon?

Do not assume tap water is safe until your water supplier says so, and see Water safety after a flood. To treat water yourself, see Water purification. For warnings, see our Taiwan alerts page. A household plan can put your water stock and local contacts in one place.

Frequently asked questions

How much water does Taiwan recommend per person?

At least 3 litres of drinking water per person per day, for at least 7 days of home supplies 1.

Where do I see water outages in Taiwan?

Taiwan Water Corporation publishes daily water-suspension information on the government open data platform 2.

What does a red water light mean?

Supply is cut by rotating zones or at set times, or water is delivered at fixed points, where residents' basic needs are served first 4.

Is Taiwan's tap water tested?

Yes. Environmental authorities sample tap water monthly and MOENV publishes the results against the drinking-water standard 3.
