Safe water in Spain: notices, drought and what to store

Check your supply zone in Spain's SINAC, follow your town hall or water supplier on notices, and store 1.5-3 L of water per person per day.

Short answer. You can look up your supply zone's water in the Ministry of Health's national system, SINAC, by autonomous community, province and municipality 1. Phaenyx found no national register of boil-water or do-not-drink notices: follow your town hall, water supplier and regional health authority. For storage, Catalonia's figures are at least 1.5 litres per person per day, 3 litres recommended, for at least 3 days 4.

How do I know if my tap water is unsafe?

Spain's Ministry of Health runs SINAC, the national information system for drinking water. Its public search lets you choose your autonomous community, province and municipality to see information on your water supply 1. The ministry explains that several actors usually take part in managing drinking water: municipalities, supply companies, control laboratories and health administrations 2.

Phaenyx found no single national list of notices declaring water unfit to drink. Watch the channels of your town hall, your water supplier and your autonomous community's health department, and see our Spain alerts page for how emergency warnings reach phones.

If you are told to boil water or not to drink it, follow the local instruction. Read What to do during a boil-water notice and Do-not-drink notices.

How much water should I store?

The national family emergency plan template lists bottled water in a 72-hour basic kit but gives no quantity 3. Catalonia's civil protection guide does: at least 1.5 litres of drinking water per person per day, 3 litres recommended for drinking and cooking, for at least 3 days 4. Full figures are on our Spain emergency supplies page; for storage and rotation, see How much water to store per person per day?.

Is Spain short of water?

Yes, in much of the country. In WRI's Aqueduct 4.0 model, the population-weighted median of Spanish cities falls in the "extremely high" category for current water stress, stays "extremely high" in the 2050 business-as-usual projection, and is "medium to high" for drought risk 5. These are city medians: a given town or river basin can sit higher or lower.

The Ministry for the Ecological Transition (MITECO) tracks drought and water scarcity every month in all inter-community river basin districts, and publishes a summary report with maps of the scenarios at the end of the previous month 6. Scarcity, the ministry explains, is linked to possible problems in meeting demand, such as public water supply and irrigation 6. MITECO also publishes tips for using water more efficiently at home 7. For household steps, see Drought preparedness.

What if I have a private well?

Phaenyx found no national testing rule for a private household well that it could confirm in an official source. Ask your autonomous community's health department, and see Private well emergencies.

What should I do after a flood?

Follow your town hall's and water supplier's instructions on tap water, and see Water safety after a flood. A household plan can keep your water stock, alert settings and local contacts in one place.
