Short answer. Phaenyx found no national register of boil-water or do-not-drink notices in Romania, so local instructions are what count. Romania's Department for Emergency Situations (DSU) asks households to keep supplies to stay home for at least three days without water, gas or electricity, with preferably 4 litres of water per person per day 1. Drought risk in Romanian cities is "medium-high" 3.
How do I know if my tap water is unsafe?
Keep the contact details of your water operator and town hall at hand: Phaenyx found no national page or feed where boil-water or do-not-drink notices are listed for the whole country. If you are told the water is not fit to drink, follow that instruction until it is lifted. See What to do during a boil-water notice, Do-not-drink notices and How to read a tap water quality report. For how national warnings, including RO-ALERT, reach your phone, see our Romania alerts page.
How much water should I store?
DSU recommends preferably 4 litres per person per day, for at least three days at home if water, gas and electricity are cut 1. Store it in a cool, dark place and replace it every 6 months 1. Consider water purification tablets 1. Ahead of a water cut, DSU advises cleaning and filling bathtubs and other containers 1.
| Household | Water for 3 days at 4 L per person per day |
|---|---|
| 1 person | 12 litres |
| 2 people | 24 litres |
| 4 people | 48 litres |
More detail is on our Romania emergency supplies page. See also Water storage containers and How to purify water.
Is Romania short of water?
Not today, but the trend matters. In WRI's Aqueduct 4.0 model, the population-weighted median of Romanian cities is "low to medium" for current water stress, rises to "medium to high" in the 2050 business-as-usual projection, and is "medium-high" for drought risk 3. These are city medians: a given area can sit higher or lower. Weather warnings are published by the National Meteorological Administration (ANM) on its warnings page 2. Phaenyx found no national page listing water-use restrictions. In a dry summer, a stored reserve covers cuts and low pressure. See Drought preparedness and No running water at home.
What if I use a private well?
Use our guide Private wells in an emergency: Phaenyx found no official national guidance on testing private wells in Romania.
What should I do after a flood?
Do not drink tap or well water until the authorities say it is safe. See Water safety after a flood. A household plan can keep your water stock and emergency contacts in one place.
