Short answer. In the Netherlands, warnings about unsafe tap water come from your drinking-water company, one of 10 that each supply their own area 1. A boil-water advice (kookadvies) means boiling water for 3 minutes before drinking it, preparing food with it or brushing your teeth 2. The government asks households to keep 3 litres of water per person per day for 72 hours 3.
How do I know if my tap water is unsafe?
Ten drinking-water companies supply most of the country's tap water, each exclusively in an area designated by the minister; about 230 other businesses with their own source also supply drinking water to third parties 1. The Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) supervises them 1. Know which company supplies your address.
Vitens, one of the 10 companies, explains how it works 2. It tests its water 200,000 times a year; when it finds contamination such as E. coli or enterococci, it issues a boil-water advice 2. Customers concerned get an e-mail, a text message or a card, so keep your contact details up to date with your company; for a large advice, a postcode checker on its website shows whether it applies to you 2. Vitens also points to waterstoring.nl for current outages and works, but says that site's map is only indicative and its own postcode checker is authoritative 2.
Under a kookadvies, boil the water for 3 minutes before you drink it, use it to prepare food or drinks (coffee, tea, squash, washing vegetables eaten raw) or brush your teeth 2. You can shower, wash your hands, run the dishwasher or washing machine and clean with tap water as usual 2. Vitens says an advice is always temporary and lasts several days: count on four to eight days, in exceptional cases longer 2. Other companies may word their advice differently: follow your own.

How much water should I store?
The official figure is 3 litres per person per day, as bottled water, in an emergency kit meant to cover the first 72 hours 3. That is 9 litres per person, or 36 litres for a household of four. Full details are on our Netherlands emergency supplies page; see also Water storage containers and How much water to store per person per day?.
Is the Netherlands short of water?
Not on average. In WRI's Aqueduct 4.0 model, the population-weighted median of Dutch cities is in the "low" category for current water stress and stays "low" in the 2050 business-as-usual projection; drought risk is "medium" 4. These are city medians: a given town or river basin can sit higher or lower.
Drought still happens. The drought season starts every year on 1 April 5. Rijkswaterstaat and the water boards watch water levels all year, and a national committee (LCW) keeps the overview when a shortage threatens 5. When there is not enough water for every user, a fixed priority order applies: safety comes first, and sufficient drinking water and an undisturbed energy supply come second 6. To prevent shortages, measures include irrigation bans 6. For household steps, see Drought preparedness.
What if I have a private well?
Phaenyx found no official Dutch guidance for households on testing a private well. Businesses that supply drinking water from their own source to others are supervised by the ILT 1. See Private well emergencies.
What should I do after a flood?
If your water company issues a boil-water advice, follow it 2, and see Water safety after a flood and our Netherlands alerts page. A household plan can keep your water stock and your company's contact details in one place.
