Short answer. Moldova's emergency inspectorate (IGSU) asks households to manage the first 72 hours alone, with on average 3 litres of water per person per day, 4 litres in hot weather 1. Phaenyx found no national list of boil-water notices; Apă-Canal Chișinău posts planned cuts by street 2. Drought risk is "high" in WRI's model; in October 2026 low Nistru flows pushed Chișinău's intake to its limit 47.
How do I know if my tap water is unsafe?
Expect the instruction from your local water operator or your town hall, and keep their contact details with your emergency papers. Phaenyx found no national register of boil-water or do-not-drink notices for Moldova, and no public database of tap water results by network. How official warnings reach you is explained on our Moldova alerts page.
In Chișinău, S.A. Apă-Canal Chișinău lists planned water cuts by street and time on its "Deconectări" page, and asks affected consumers to keep a minimum reserve of water for drinking and household use during the cut 2. It covers that operator's network, not the rest of the country.
If you are told to boil water or not to drink it, follow the local instruction. See What to do during a boil-water notice, Do-not-drink notices and No running water.
How much water should I store?
IGSU's guide says: on average 3 litres of water per person per day, 4 litres during heatwaves, for the first 72 hours 1. That is 9 litres per person for three days, or 12 litres in hot weather. Calculate for the whole family, find out where the nearest natural water sources are, such as wells and springs, and keep a water filter in the emergency suitcase 1. Details are on our Moldova emergency supplies page; see also How much water to store per person per day? and Water purification.
Is Moldova short of water?
In WRI's Aqueduct 4.0 model, the population-weighted median of Moldovan cities is "low to medium" for water stress today and in the 2050 business-as-usual projection, but "high" for drought risk, the highest category 7. These are city medians: a given town can sit higher or lower.
On 16 October 2026, Apă-Canal Chișinău reported that its intake and pumping station was at the limit of its operating range because of low flows in the Nistru river; a reserve submersible pump was started and supply stayed normal 4. The operator manages 43 reservoirs holding 178,800 m³ as a strategic reserve, and 40 drinking-water boreholes 5.
The meteorological authority (AMM) publishes a monthly SPEI drought map, for information only 6. Phaenyx found no national page listing water-use restrictions. See Drought preparedness and Water storage containers.
What if I have a private well?
IGSU lists wells and springs as the natural water sources to locate in a crisis 1. Phaenyx found no national guidance on how often to test a private well. In Chișinău, Apă-Canal's laboratory tests water from individual wells, for a fee, on a written request 3. See Private well emergencies.
What should I do after a flood?
Follow the instructions of your town hall or water operator: Phaenyx found no official Moldovan guidance on drinking water after a flood. See Water safety after a flood. A household plan can keep your water stock, local contacts and warning channels in one place.
