Short answer. In Finland, information on water supply disruptions and boil-water advisories comes from your local water utility: check its website and follow its instructions 1. Phaenyx found no national list of boil-water notices. The 72 hours campaign sets a minimum of 5 litres of bottled water per person in the home kit 2, and Suomi.fi asks households to keep clean containers with lids for storing water 3.
How do I know if my tap water is unsafe?
The 72 hours campaign, run by the Finnish National Rescue Association (SPEK), says to check the website of your local water utility in any local water supply disruption: it carries information on ongoing disruptions 1. If the water is contaminated, follow the utility's instructions on water use and its boil-water advisory, and do not use the water during shock chlorination of the pipes 1. It also suggests taping a warning note over the tap to stop anyone using contaminated water, and cleaning appliances such as a coffee machine once clean water returns 1.
Phaenyx found no single national list of boil-water notices. See our Finland alerts page for how emergency warnings reach you, and read What to do during a boil-water notice and Do-not-drink notices.
How much water should I store?
The 72 hours home kit list sets a minimum of 5 litres of bottled water per person 2. An average person needs about 2 litres of clean drinking water a day, plus water for cooking and hygiene; one or two buckets per person per day is usually enough 1. Backup water distribution is usually organised when a disruption lasts longer than 24 hours, so keep lidded containers or canisters to collect water from distribution points 1. Suomi.fi asks households to keep supplies for at least 3 days 3. See our Finland emergency supplies page and How much water to store per person per day?.
Is Finland short of water?
Rarely, but dry spells happen. In WRI's Aqueduct 4.0 model, the population-weighted median of Finnish cities falls in the "low to medium" category for current water stress, stays "low to medium" in the 2050 business-as-usual projection, and is "medium" for drought risk 6. These are city medians: a given town or area can sit higher or lower.
The Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) publishes the drought situation on vesi.fi. Its 2 October 2026 update said drought was continuing in eastern and central Finland, with weekly updates resuming in May 2027 5. During a drought, follow your water utility's and municipality's announcements on water-use restrictions, such as lawn watering or car washing, and keep drinking water in reserve 4. See Drought preparedness.
What if I have a private well?
If your well holds less water than usual for the season, start rationing its use; if you notice colour, cloudiness or a strange smell or taste, stop using the well water and have it tested 4. If your well runs dry, you can report it on the vesi.fi map service 7. See Private well emergencies.
What should I do after a flood?
Follow your water utility's instructions, and see Water safety after a flood. A household plan can keep your water stock, containers and utility contacts in one place.
